3rd Goulet Pens haul

The past week has been the "week of the Noodler's flex pen" it seems. Goulet Pens, in particular, was assaulted by orders for the latest batch of Noodler's flex fountain pens and I was one of the lucky ones who managed to get their hands on a Noodler's flex in Lapis Inferno (aka blue with white swirls).

The title of this post is a bit dishonest because I've combined two orders into one post but that's only because the first order only contained ink samples plus a few notebooks (and this is not a blog for notebooks and paper), while the second order had another batch of ink samples, plus the 3 pens.

Just a quick word about the Noodler's flex pen. I like the color and I'm glad I picked it instead of another. It also happened that the blue pens were the second most popular after the clear ones. I believe I have loaded the pen with the wrong ink because I used a very light gray which may not be the best option for a flex nib. Though I wasn't expecting much from this pen, at this point I'm not particularly impressed with its flexible nib. I'll have to play some more with it before I can review it though.

From the looks of it, I'll have enough ink samples to review for the next year. Can't wait to use them all!

  2. That's quite a haul.  I look forward to your reviews of Noodler's Fox Red and Polar Green.  I've found them to be opposites.  While a highly saturated ink, Fox Red has been well behaved in whatever pen I've used it in.  I use it only slightly less than Diamine Oxblood as my daily ink for editing.

Polar Green, and Bad Green Gator, are on my short list of inks that haven't worked out.  The inks seem to run wet, exhibit high nib creep, and slow dry times on Rhodia paper.  I prefer F to EF nibs though so you may find they work great for wider nibbed pens.

Have fun experimenting with all these inks.

  3. I'm quite excited about Fox Red. I have tested Polar Blue but didn't have the time to write the actual review and it has many characteristics that I like. I was hoping that Polar Green would be the same. I found that Polar Blue dries very fast but I'll be curios to see how Polar Green compares.

  4. That's an awesome haul!!! I'm really wanting to get some sample from Goulet Pens soon...

Can't wait to see your reviews of them. It's gonna be good. :)

  5. Aw man. So jealous. That ink looks amazing, and it will be a blast to go through them all. I will be waiting to read those reviews, so get to work!

  6. Tyler - You should get an order from Goulet. It's nice to try before you buy a whole bottle, and you will likely want to keep the little vials around for any ink you need to store. Say, do you do nib grinding? I have been working on grinding some Pilot Varsity pens for practice, and I do have some questions. Let me know if you do.

  7. Sorry you didn't like the flex pen. I too got one from Goulet and I love it. It's my first flex pen. I loved it so much I ordered another one (from another seller; the Goulets were out). The ink does matter. I'm using Noodler's Black Swan in Australian Rose and Iroshizuki Kon-peki, which are to highly shading inks. The flex pen really brings out the shading variations, and that makes the pen fun to write with.

  8. It's not that I didn't like it, I just wasn't very impressed. Though it is my first flex pen, I can imagine what a wet noodle feels like. This one is far from that.

Nonetheless, I'm just learning how to use it and I feel that I might warm up to it.

  9. Yes, I do nib grinding as a profession. My email can be found on my website which in turn can be found by clicking my name at the top of this comment.

Yea, the Goulet sample vials are handy to keep around. I love the new ones!

  10. Baystate Blue is my everyday writing ink.  Love it.

  11. What pen do you use it in? I'm assuming it is dedicated. I will have to be very careful in which pen I put it.

  12. A nice haul indeed ;) I like what you described, how I was 'assaulted' with flex pens, that's pretty accurate! I'm pretty sure you've already seen my vid I just did on adjusting the flex pen, but in case you didn't, here you go: http://www.inknouveau.com/2011/06/filling-and-adjusting-noodlers-flex-pen.html

The Lapis did go fast, in about an hour (and that was with a bogged down server, too). Clears were gone in minutes, but we didn't have many of those. The Lapis went crazy fast, I figured they'd be the most popular, but they really outsold the others.

It looks like you'll be all set on samples for a while! Well, at least until Mix-Free finally comes in ;) For your flex pen, I'd maybe try Grenade, Electric DC Blue, Shah's Rose, or Daphne Blue next. Those should be more impressive in this pen.

  13. Thanks Brian. I'm subscribed to your blog (of course!!!) so I catch everything you post. I'm gonna have a lot of inks to review here. Can't wait!

  14. I don't think you got enough samples ;) I got one of the demonstrators back when they were first released -- the clear demonstrator. I had no idea they'd become desirable, so I'm glad I chose that color. They're really quite fun to use.

  15. I think I need more samples :)
Nah, these are gonna last me a year at least, the way I go through them.

I had a Noodler's fountain pen before, with the regular nib, but I destroyed it.
